Daniel Lefcourt: Reversed and Remanded
04.10.07 – 01.12.07

Edward Mitterrand and Gérard Sanz are pleased to announce the first exhibition in Zurich of New York artist Daniel Lefcourt.

In the show the artist will present a group of new sculptures some of which have been conceived for the gallery space. Lefcourt's sculpture's, like horizontal arrangements of beautifully finished strips of MDF board painted black, further explore the correlation between painting and sculpture while at the same time reflecting concerns with formal strategies of art and abstract language. These works can be seen as signs of absence, "evasive statements" which allude to that which has been negated or denied.

Mr. Lefcourt has prepared the following statement regarding his first solo exhibition at Galerie Mitterrand + Sanz:

“I am not going to address specifics… I have no present knowledge… I have already been quite clear about this in the past... your interpretation in no way corresponded to my intention... This is the only answer I can give you... I am not at liberty to disclose… The declarations being made are outlandish and filled with error... Such a thing is pure speculation… I’m sorry you understood it that way... It’s unfortunate… The idea that I would have expressed such things is outrageous... I will look into it... You should pay attention to what I actually put forth and not what you think was implied... I regret the unfortunate reaction... If such a thing were true I believe I would have remembered... These types of statements seem to reflect the insights of those with little, if any, connection to the activities... I will not make a comment on something that is ongoing... I have not ruled anything out... This line of questioning is reckless... I will not dignify that with a response...”

Daniel Lefcourt was born in New York City in 1975 and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1997 and his MFA from Columbia University in 2005. He has had solo exhibitions at Taxter and Spengemann in New York, in 2004 and 2006, and at Groeflin Maag in Basel, Switzerland in 2005. Lefcourt's work has been featured in numerous group shows including several exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art's P.S.1 venue including Greater New York in 2000 and The Gold Standard in 2006, Do You Like Stuff? at Swiss Institute in New York and most recently in For the People of Paris, at Sutton Lane Paris and Concrete Works at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York. His work has been reviewed in ArtForum, The New York Times, Frieze, The New Yorker, ArtNews, ArtNet.com, The Boston Globe and has been included in publications such as Artworks: Money, by Katy Seigel.
